Detained Egyptian journalist Shaimaa Adel released in Khartoum

Detained Egyptian journalist Shaimaa Adel has been released Wednesday, after she was arrested in the Sudanese capital Khartoum last Tuesday while covering protests against President Omar Al-Bashir, says Bakir Hanin, spokesperson for the Sudanese embassy in Egypt.

The Al-Watan daily newspaper reporter, who was interrogated about her press permit in the country, was reportedly released following intervention by the Egyptian embassy in Khartoum.

Adel is the second Egyptian journalist to be arrested in Khartoum while covering the popular anti-regime protests in less than two weeks.

Salma El-Wardani, a former Ahram Online journalist who currently reports for American news agency Bloomberg, was detained on 21 June while covering anti-austerity protests in front of Khartoum University.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the Egyptian embassy brokered El-Wardani's release. She was subsequently deported and travelled back to Egypt last week.
